Description

The Research Laboratory Manager provides operational oversight of a molecular virology, immunology research laboratory that studies HIV pathogenesis. A research manager with a scientific background in virology, molecular cell biology, and/or immunology will oversee research associates and the operational logistics of supporting the lab. Training new staff and graduate trainees in some basic laboratory procedures and the safe use of basic lab equipment. 

The manager will oversee equipment and service contracts on major equipment, including microscopes, cell sorters, analytical equipment. This individual will also be responsible for laboratory compliance and chemical and biosafety. 

Produces summary reports and databases that reflect inventory of all faculty, staff and equipment in the laboratory. And participates in laboratory meetings to provide scientific input on research projects. 

Responsibilities
  • Oversees laboratory communications related to lab operations 
  • Works closely with individual Principal Investigators (PIs) and management to ensure effective day-to-day workflow of basic science research laboratories.
  • Orients new personnel and provides basic laboratory procedure training and instrument training. 
  • Trains and instruct research staff on equipment to support specific research needs.
  • In conjunction with department Financial leadership, develops and manages annual operating budgets for each shared equipment resource located on assigned lab(s). 
  • Oversees staff who are supporting centralized/shared lab functions, such as dishwashers, service representatives. 
  • Manages the process of purchasing equipment and supplies. Assists in the negotiation and oversight of service contracts on equipment.
  • Ensures that all equipment is properly maintained and safe to use.
  • Responsible for communications within MSSM Facilities Management to provide a streamlined approach to managing laboratory needs.
  • Responsible for compliance to all school, local, state and federal Regulations as it relates to radiation safety, hazardous chemical waste disposal, environmental services, and other related areas deemed appropriate.
  • Gathers and analyzes related data and trends to determine short-term and long-term financial research implications. 

Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree, preferably in biology, chemistry or animal science, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
  • 3-5 years of related research and administration experience required.

The Mount Sinai Health System (MSHS) provides salary ranges that comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $68000 - $118964.92 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, education, and operational need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
