Information Technology Technician


Position Summary : Working under the direction of the IT Department, the IT Technician is responsible for the operation of NICTD’s non-PTC internal computer systems, local area networks, wide area networks, computer-based security systems and data communications services.

Description : IT Technician duties include the following:
  • Perform and participate in Change Management and Change Requests for all updates, modifications and new installations.
  • Oversee and assist in the field service and repair of computer systems, peripherals, network equipment, and security equipment (access control and cameras).
  • Oversee and assist with the repair and services, workstations, adding, removing software as required.
  • Oversee and assist with the installation and administration of all company local and wide area networks.
  • Respond to the needs and questions of network users concerning their access to resources on the network and the operation of various software programs, such as Microsoft Office.
  • Remain abreast of changes in user and system software and hardware requirements.
  • Update network and client operating systems as required.
  • Oversee and assist with the installation and update of software applications as required for Windows Security Updates and Endpoint Detection and Response solution.
  • Oversee and assist with the proper software licensing for all company software packages.
  • Oversee and assist with the management of the system backups, user files, data security and network rights.
  • Performs other duties as directed by the Chief Information Officer.
Position Requirements : The following skills will be considered in the selection of candidates for interviews:
Technical Skills
  • Strong understanding of computer hardware and software
  • Proficiency in operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux)
  • Networking knowledge (TCP/IP, routers, switches)
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Experience with common software applications (Microsoft Office Suite, etc.)
  • Knowledge of IT security best practices
Soft Skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Ability to explain technical issues in layman's terms
  • Patience and ability to handle stressful situations
  • Attention to detail and organizational skills
Education and Certifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or related field (preferred)
  • IT certifications (CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, etc.) can be advantageous
  • A valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record under the district’s fleet policy is required. Reliable transportation to and from Michigan City, Indiana, in all types of weather is required.
  • Willing to work indoors and outdoors, occasionally varied shift hours, occasionally varied days off, some holidays if operationally necessary and extended hours based on the needs of the service. May participate in weekend duty rotation.
  • Superior safety, attendance, and work service records.


Selection is also subject to satisfactory results from a post-offer physical examination (including drug and alcohol screening tests) and a post-offer background evaluation (including criminal and trust-related criteria).

The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.

Salary and Benefits : Salary range is expected to be $59,000-$65,000. Salary will be based on skills, experience, and consistent with pay structure for others with comparable assignments. Credit for time served in other railroad employment and military service will be applied in determining vacation day entitlements. The benefit package will be the standard set of benefits received by NICTD management. Details are available during the interview process. Relocation benefits do not apply to this position.
