Under the direction of the Director of Mission or Director of Spiritual Care, the Chaplain III ministers to patients, families, and staff around religious and spiritual needs. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, the chaplain provides spiritual care and emotional support within the context of illness, crisis, loss, and death. The chaplain is committed to the Mission and models its core values. Essential Functions include recognizing the sacramental needs of the Catholic population, providing for religious and ritual needs of diverse faith groups, ministering to a diverse population in a non-proselytizing manner, collaborating with team members and interdisciplinary team including appropriate referrals, providing effective pastoral ministry using advanced pastoral care and counseling techniques, and demonstrating proficiency in conducting full-spectrum spiritual care assessment and care planning process. Education requirements include a Master’s degree in related field such as Pastoral Studies or Theology (required), with preferred degrees including Master's in Divinity and Doctoral degree in Theology or Philosophy. Required licensing and certifications include four or more units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), Board certification by professional certifying organizations, with preferred advanced certifications. Experience required is three years as a Chaplain in a healthcare setting and ecclesial endorsement from church body. Skills include ability to be present to others in illness or crisis, pastoral support within cultural contexts, active listening, ethical practices, clinical pastoral care, collaboration, communication, crisis counseling and intervention, empathy, flexibility, interpersonal skills, healthcare ethics, interfaith dialogue, organization, pastoral counseling and ministries, planning, presentation, public relations, relationship building, religious studies, spiritual care and assessments, teamwork, theological reflection, verbal and written communication, leadership, knowledge of medical directives, moral philosophy and values, critical incident stress debriefing, and content development.
