Job Description Girl Scouts San Diego is looking for an Arborist to be responsible for seeding, planting, propagating, maintaining, and caring for the council nursery structures and tree stock. This position also takes part in waste wood fiber management, maintaining defensible space, and supports forest health education of camp guests and community members. The position is located in Julian, California.
Essential Responsibilities/Duties: - Perform seed collection activities on council properties for various species of native trees.
- Propagate seed stock in nursery environment in accordance with industry best practice.
- Plant seedlings and trees on camp property in accordance with the approved vegetation treatment plan.
- Develop and provide educational curriculum to camp guests and community members, with regards to forest health activities.
- Maintain nursery structures and site in accordance with council policies.
- Network with CalFire, National Forest Service, Resource Conservation District and others to identify grant opportunities and new practices emerging in the fuel reduction and forest management industry.
- Write and apply for land management grant proposals to fund maintenance of forest management activity.
- Represent GSSD on the regional forest health council, through the Resource Conservation District.
- Maintain inventory of tools, equipment, and supplies.
- Maintain equipment and service records.
- Ability to qualify on and operate heavy equipment to assist with forest management activities.
- Maintain clear and positive written and verbal communication with all internal and external clients.
- Observe all safety precautions and comply with all company health and safety rules and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned to meet department objectives and timelines, and camp preparation and readiness needs.
Experience and Skills - High school diploma or equivalent; Associate degree, or equivalent experience in botanical science or forestry management, preferred
- Minimum five years working in the landscape or forest industry
- Working knowledge of Microsoft software such as Excel, Word, etc.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and public speaking skills
- Strong work ethic and ability to work successfully independently and with a team
- Must be available and willing to work Fridays through Saturdays
- Ability to lift heavy objects weighting up to 60 pounds
- Ability to safely drive tractors and other motorized vehicles
- Proficiency in safe and proper use of hand tools, power equipment, light/heavy machinery and building materials
- Professional demeanor and able to build rapport with others and foster positive and harmonious working relationships
- Effective time management skills, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to establish and maintain priorities and meet deadlines.
- Valid drivers' license, proof of insurance, and reliable transportation must be maintained throughout employment. Daily and/or occasional travel may be required

Salary Range: $28.00 - $30.00 per hour.
